The following activities are designed for students who require extension. They are challenging tasks that require deeper levels of thinking and application of concepts taught in class. If you choose to complete any of these tasks you may or may not hand them in to be corrected - it is up to you! Please see your class teacher if you would like a more detailed explanation of either of these tasks.

Reading: Begin your very own Reading Response Journal! Before you begin you will need a novel, an exercise book and your thinking cap!
Begin a novel of your choice. You may like to borrow one from the library, borrow one from a friend, buy an e-book from the App Store or save up your pocket money for the real thing from a book shop! Make sure it is a book that really interests you and one that is not too easy or too hard to read.
Once you have your book look at the front cover and read the blurb. Write down what you predict the book will be about. Also write about what attracted you to this book, why you chose it. Have you read any other books by the same auhor?
Ok, now you're ready to begin! Read the first chapter!
After you have read the chapter it is time to write another response. We don't want you to retell what happened in the chapter, rather we want you to do some deep thinking about what has happend. You can use a thinking tool or simply write a reflection based on your thinking footprints.
As you progress through the book slowly work your way up the grid. Complete one response per one or two chapters.

Writing: Begin a Writer's Notebook at home!
By now you should be an expert at the Writer's Notebook process! Plant a seed, do some thinking, list some text types, plan, draft, edit and publish your writing!
The best thing about Writer's Notebooks is that there are no rules as to what you must write about. You don't even have to complete every piece you start! If a writing piece gets boring, stop and start a new one, SIMPLE!
Go shopping for your very own personal Writer's Notebook. This is not something you have to share with others, but it might be - it's up to you! No rules remember!
Begin by decorating the front cover of your book. The cover should reflect who you are as a person.
Plant your first seed. As you know a seed can be anything! A photo, a drawing, a word, a blade of grass, a chip packet...ANYTHING! Once you plant it, do some thinking. You can do this by using a thinking tool or do what Mrs Jordan likes to call 'Thinking Diarrhoea' - where you just write whatever comes to your mind without filtering it too much!
Once you have done plenty of thinking list 4 different texts you could write BASED ON YOUR THINKING (not your seed). Sometimes your thining takes you off the track (which is GREAT), follow that track, don't restrict yourself to your initial seed!
Choose one of the texts and begin your plan! Plan your writing based around the structure in which it is written. eg: Before writing a narrative, you have to think about the setting, who your characters will be, what the problem is going to be, how the characters are going to solve the problem and everything else in between!
Once you have a deatiled plan, begin your draft!
Edit your draft. Reread it to a friend or family member. Ask them if it makes sense. Is your message clear? Have you followed the correct structure for your chosen text type? Have you used complex sentences and rich words? Have you punctuated correctly? Have you underlined your spelling errors, made an attempt to fix them by applying the appropriate codes and rules and have you checked them using a dictionary? So many questions to ask yourself when editing PROPERLY!! Don't rush this bit!
Lastly, is it a piece you are really proud of? If so, what are you waiting for?! PUBLISH IT!
